Frequently Asked Questions

  • An end-of-life doula (a.k.a. death doula or death midwife) is a trained professional who provides holistic support to individuals and their loved ones as they navigate the end-of-life journey. Similar to a birth doula who assists during the birthing process, a death doula focuses on guiding and comforting.

The role of an end-of-life doula is to provide essential support throughout the dying process for a more peaceful, dignified, and meaningful transition.

The work of an end-of-life doula may include emotional support, practical assistance on end-of-life planning and advance directives, assistance in creating care plans, education and advocacy in the dying process, spiritual guidance, help to create comfort for the dying person, support on legacy projects or reflecting on one’s life, and bereavement support. These are just some of the things an end-of-life doula may offer. Note that every doula is different and offers various services that may or may not look like the services of the next. Regardless, it’s important to find the doula that’s right for you and your needs!

  • Engaging the services of a death doula is a profound choice for individuals and families facing the end of life. Death doulas offer compassionate support, assist in end-of-life planning, and act as advocates, ensuring that the wishes and values of the dying person are honored. From facilitating communication among family members to providing respite for caregivers and guiding personalized ceremonies, death doulas bring comfort, empathy, and holistic well-being during this challenging transition.

It is essential to recognize that emotional and compassionate support, in addition to medical attention, plays a crucial role during the end-of-life process.

  • As a doula, I provide non-medical support. I can sit vigil with those who are dying. I also provide respite services meaning I can be present with and provide basic caregiving to the person at the end of life. Please note that I cannot administer medications. I also ask that the primary caregiver is available via phone when they step away.
